Spiced Energy Balls
I never really spent any time thinking about energy balls even though my Instagram and Facebook feed is filled with them. It’s one of those ‘snack fads’ as far as I was concerned. However, a little while ago I had bought some dates (something I quite like to munch on now and again instead of sweets) and with all the other ingredients in my cupboard, I though to myself….”why not give it a go. The worst that can happen is that I’ll end up with some stodgy goo”. For those of you who know me, my Sri Lankan Spices were going to have to make an appearance in this recipe and so – Spiced Energy Balls here we come!
Time to Prepare -
Makes approximately 16 small servings.
Preparation Time – 5 minutes
Making Time – 3 minutes
150g natural unsweetened dates
Large handful of nuts (I added cashew nuts, sunflower seeds and 1 tbs ground almonds)
1-2 tsp peanut butter
1-2 tsp salted caramel (or maple syrup, golden syrup)
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Small handful of dried fruits. (I used dried papaya)
Pinch of salt
1/2 of a lime or lemon juice
Time to Make Spiced Energy Balls -
1. Start by deseeding all your dates (if they aren’t already done for you)
2. Then add all your ingredients into a food processor.
3. Blitz all the ingredients together until you reach your desired consistency for the Spiced Energy Balls. For a smoother finish, blend for longer and for a chunkier version reduce the blending time accordingly. I would recommend you taste as you go too, as you might want to add more salt, salted caramel
or lemon/lime juice depending
on your personal preference.
4. Once you have reached your preferred consistency, you can mould the mix into either balls or bar shapes.
5. Then place in the fridge and allow them to cool.
6. When you next feel a little pekish, dig into your Spiced Energy Balls. Not only will they satisfy any sweet craving you may have but they will also satiate your hunger pangs. Knowing that you are eating something healthy and made from scratch is just a little added bonus : )
Optional But Super Tasty
Instead of using Peanut butter, you could try almond butter, cashew butter or even Tahini – they all taste equally good!
I may have used dried papaya for this recipe but I have since gone on and made more using dried pineapple, freeze dried raspberry (a personal favourite), mango and cranberries and again they all added there own unique yet tasty twist to the recipe.
I have left my Spiced Energy Balls uncoated but you could try rolling them in desiccated coconut. Add a few cacao nibs too for that little flavour twist. Alternatively rolling them in coconut sugar really helps to sort that sweet tooth out ; )
As for the nuts, again you can adapt what you use. Walnuts, almonds, mixed nuts, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds …. any of these will do. So before you head to the shops, to buy all the ingredients to make these Spiced Energy Balls, check what you have in your cupboards as you might find that you already have a few of the ingredients there!
